Pastor's Notes (January 2011)

Dearest Friends in Christ,

Three more days until the New Year arrives, with all its excitement and expectations. In the past week, we have welcomed the infant Jesus into our lives and this Sunday, we will be witnesses to the visit of the three Magi. A lot of activity in a mere week’s time, and as much as we wish for a slower pace in which to enjoy the Christmas and New Year’s holiday time, it just seems to rush by us and we barely have time to catch our breath….then it is over. Sadly, I do not have any wisdom on how to make it different, but I am always open to suggestions. Ready or not, the 2011 is upon us….it is a new year and a fresh opportunity to grow in faith and serve God.

What will 2011 bring? Perhaps the better question is what will we bring to the new year? Will we bring optimism and a renewed spirit to live fully and embrace the opportunities that come our way? The past couple of years have been difficult economically, and sadly that tends to color the way in which we look at the world. There is no magic solution to the serious concerns around high unemployment, mortgage foreclosures and the accompanying despair. While we cannot change the realities of the world in which we live, we can look around us and rededicate ourselves to making a difference in our own community. Isn’t this what Jesus invited the people of the first century to do? Like those long-ago inhabitants of Israel, we are asked to shelter the homeless, clothe the naked, feed the hungry, give water to those who thirst, and visit those imprisoned by their own actions, disease or infirmity. And we can certainly do all of that!

It is my prayer that 2011 will bring to us renewed opportunities to bring hope where there is despair, friendship to places of loneliness, joy to erase tears, love to banish hatred, and light to illuminate every dark place. May it be so…..
