Pastor's Notes (December 2010)

Dearest Friends in Christ,

“For unto us a child is born; unto us a Son is given.” (Isaiah 9.6)

We rejoice each year to hear these words of the prophet spoken to us, for they hold particular meaning. In the simple image of a newborn baby, we know the promises of God fulfilled; the words of the prophet become fact. The Word of God has come to dwell among humankind and, more than two thousand years later, we continue to praise God for the gift of the Son.

In our generosity at Christmas, we imitate the gift of the Son, given to us. Of course, no gift will ever match the coming of the Christ child to humankind, but the gesture reminds us of God’s actions towards us. In love we reach out to those closest to us, and through charitable gifts, we reach out to those whose faces will never be familiar to us. In the season of giving, we touch many lives as we share the light of God’s love.

As the light of God’s love bathes the earth during the Christmas season, we should be proud to claim our identities as followers of the risen Christ. In serving those in need, those who suffer, those who experience injustice and inequality, we are participants in a long and rich tradition of faithful discipleship. Imperfect though we are, our work is perfected in love – God’s love – come to earth in human form. The star that guided shepherds and wise men to the manger continues to guide us on our journeys of faith. That is our firm belief, our consolation, and our Christmas joy.

Wishing you every Christmas blessing,

Pastor Gail
