August 2012

Dearest Friends in Christ,

I am not trying to rush the summer away, for I love the summer months – the bright days, the gardens in bloom, and the lazy hours spent savoring the warmth that we will surely miss in January.  However, as August comes upon us, my thoughts turn to September and the flurry of activity in the church that will begin again.  Further, there will be some changes in our music ministry and Christian education ministry this fall, which are all cause for celebration and anticipation. Some wonderful things await us in just a few short weeks.

What also awaits me is some vacation time, which I will begin on August 31, returning to the pulpit on September 23.  I have long wanted to visit the Holy Land and will see that come to fruition this year.  We will visit Ephesus, Nazareth, Galilee, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Alexandria.  I am very excited to see the land that I metaphorically dwell in every day.  To see the Jordan River and lay my hand on the Wailing Wall will be very powerful – at least that is my expectation.  And I will be eager to share my observations with you upon my return.  Sadly, that means that I will miss Rally Day Sunday, but I know that you will all gather, worship, and rejoice in community – and let me know every detail when I return.

I do ask for your prayers for our safe travel and that our eyes will be opened to what God will have us see and learn during our visit to this sacred land.

I pray that it will be an opportunity to deepen my personal faith journey and sense of call to serve God in this wonderful community.
