Invitation and Introduction

posted Sep 7, 2018, 10:57 AM by Lee Church

“To sing is to pray twice” is a quote which you may have heard before. It is widely attributed to St. Augustine, though no concrete evidence exists to support this. However, if I were St. Augustine, I would welcome this quote’s misattribution. We have a gift in music and song like few others; it allows us to access a level of praise and thanksgiving that is enhanced by aesthetic and catharsis. It feels good to sing. For some of us, it can be difficult to express the outpouring of emotion that we feel in praise for God. Music in worship gives us the opportunity to praise God in a loud voice and feel no awkwardness or shame. The Lord empowers us to respond through music in the Bible: in Ephesians, Paul urges Christians to sing “…hymns and spiritual songs,” and the prophet Zephaniah wrote that God “rejoices over us with singing.” The Bible even provides a treasure-trove of glorious musical prayers of the Psalms.

I write this to encourage anyone interested to join the Sr. Choir or Praise Team at Lee Church. Rehearsals for both will begin Thursday, September 6, 2018 (Praise Team 6:00 – 7:00 PM, Sr. Choir 7:00 – 8:30 PM). I would love to talk to you about music at Lee Church. If you play an instrument, I would love to talk to you about opportunities to play in worship as well. Please email me favazza (at) gmail.com, or feel free to call me or text me. My cell phone number is 901-246-5817. There is a spot for anyone who wants to participate in the Praise Team or Sr. Choir. You may think that you can’t sing well or read music, but I promise, if you can tell the difference between up and down and black and white, you are farther ahead than you think!

For those of you who do not know me yet, my name is Alex Favazza. I am the new Sr. Choir and Praise Team director here at Lee Church. My wife Melanie and I are thrilled to be here in New Hampshire. I am the new Director of Choral Activities at the University of New Hampshire. I originally hail from Memphis, TN, and Melanie is from Biloxi, MS. However, we just moved from Tallahassee, Florida where I received my PhD from Florida State University. We now live in Dover and love it up here! I look forward to meeting everyone at Lee Church.

Best,

Alex Favazza
Sr. Choir and Praise Team Director
