Diaconate News

The Diaconate held its monthly meeting on Monday, December 10, 2012 with a quorum present.  Following the administrative items, Pastor Gail presented her report.  Some topics included a planned pulpit swap with Reverend Michael Denny, Interim Pastor in Farmington on January 13, 2013; forthcoming opportunity for our parishioners to sign Christmas cards for our military troops returning home from the Middle East; Civil Rights Sunday January 20; Missions Sunday January 27 with Susan Hollinger as the guest speaker; and an adult study, “Embracing an Adult Faith” by Marcus Borg, which she plans to facilitate beginning in February.

The Wilkinson Food Pantry was closed on November 19 due to our Thanksgiving Holiday Food Basket project and will be again on December 17 due to our Christmas project.  Forty-one (41) families which represented 64 individuals were served by the pantry during the days we were open in November and December.  We were also blessed by receiving food donations from the first graders at Mast Way School; twenty (20) boxes of food, half of which were perishables, from an anonymous donor; fifteen (15) boxes of food from Cathy Zocchi who organized a food drive in memory of her son, Dan; and eight (8) cases of food from the December 7 USDA shipment.   As we were so fortunate, we were able to share some of it by donating 20 boxes of food to Waysmeet.  The pantry will resume being open on  the first and third Monday of each month from 6:00 - 7:00 PM beginning in January.

The Diaconate held a special meeting on November 26 to discuss our ongoing survey results and was able to document the likes and dislikes offered by 80 individual parishioners or families as well as suggestions to increase attendance on Sunday mornings and additional opportunities which could be offered in addition to mission outreach work and adult Bible Study.  We concluded the survey results at our regular December meeting by examining the six questions posed to families with Sunday School age children.  The latter will be shared with the Christian Education Committee.  We are now at the stage where we are attempting to interpret all the data which will hopefully lead to a plan of action to reverse the trend toward declining attendance.  Although plans are not finalized as of this writing, we may be presenting the data which we received and what we propose doing with it at the Annual Meeting on February 3.

Thirty (30) Thanksgiving food baskets were packed and distributed to needy families within our community on November 20.  We are again busy working with the Holiday Basket Committee preparing to pack and distribute approximately the same number of baskets, with gifts added for children, at Christmas.   This will take place in Fellowship Hall on Friday morning, December 21 beginning at 8:30.  We would more than welcome any parishioner to join us.  Setup for this will be the previous evening, December 20 beginning at 6:00 PM and lasting for a little over an hour.  Again, any parishioner is more than welcome to join us.  Many hands make light work.

Christmas Eve candlelight services are scheduled for 4:30, 6:30, and 8:00 with scripture readings provided by Diaconate members at the 6:30 and 8:00 services.  Children will read at 4:30.  The three wise men and baby Jesus are all on their way to the manger and will arrive on Christmas Eve.  The sanctuary will remain decorated until Epiphany Sunday, January 6, 2013 when the decorations will be stored for another year.

The Diaconate would like to extend to all Lee Church Congregational members and friends a very blessed Merry Christmas and Happy 2013.
