Diaconate (September 2011)

posted Dec 18, 2014, 1:22 PM by Henry McTague

The Diaconate held its monthly meeting on Monday, August 8, 2011 with a quorum present. Following our opening prayer and completing several administrative items, we continued to focus our attention on our responsibilities during Pastor Gail’s sabbatical leave.

Since our last report, we welcomed Debra Moore, C.M. as our supply pastor on July 24 and Rev. Roger Burkhart on July 31. Rev. Burkhart also baptized Donald Rich IV who was given a quilt from the Women’s Guild. As of this writing, Rev. Brendon Bass has supplied for us during the first two Sundays in August and will also be with us for the rest of the month. Rev. Larry Brickner-Wood returns to us on Sept 4 and 11 after which Pastor Gail will be returning to the pulpit following her sabbatical leave.

The Diaconate will be making arrangements for all congregational care which may be needed during Pastor Gail’s sabbatical leave. Please contact either Sally Cedarholm in the church office (659-2861), Rod MacKay (659-5063), or Katrina Rhodes (868-1514) should you need congregational care such as visitations, errands, rides, etc and we will be happy to make them available for you. Pastor Gail has also provided resources for us to use should pastoral care be needed so please let us know if that is the case.

The ushers continue to record all of the prayer concerns and celebrations during the worship services and provide them to Sally that afternoon or the following morning for the “Weekly Update.” These are sometimes difficult to hear, especially as we are not facing the congregation, so speaking as clearly as possible would be very helpful to us to assure that we record your prayer concerns and celebrations accurately. Thank you in advance from all of us.

The Wilkinson Food Pantry continues to be open the first and third Monday of each month from 6:00- 7:00 PM. We are serving many more families these days than we have in the past and we sincerely appreciate your donations. Barbara Hartwell, our Wilkinson Food Pantry Coordinator, reported that 24 families were served in July representing 58 individuals.

We received two cases of frozen chickens from the USDA on August 12. Our Vacation Bible School provided a “wagon load” of food to the pantry and a young girl, instead of receiving any birthday gifts, asked her friends to donate food to our pantry. Items particularly needed are published in the bulletin every Sunday. Thank you in advance for supporting this ministry.

The Diaconate is investigating the possibility of using a website called “Lotsa Helping Hands.” It is a way to help a friend, loved one, and/or family in the community who may be in crisis. Examples include meal delivery, rides, and visits. It can also help organize volunteers to help a military family during deployment or upon arrival homes as well as many other coordination needs. The link to the website is https://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/.

We are continuing to work with Christian Education, Trustees, Missions, and Music with the planning for Rally Day on September 18. We held our first meeting on August 3. Stay tuned and look for information about this exciting day in a separate article within this newsletter.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the worship services or if we can be of any help to you, please feel free to contact any member of the Diaconate.
