Diaconate (November 2011)

posted Dec 18, 2014, 1:23 PM by Henry McTague

The Diaconate held its monthly meeting on Monday, October 10, 2011 with a quorum present. Following our opening prayer, we welcomed Sheila Bennion, Director of Christian Education, who discussed her requirements with us for Communion Sunday, November 6 when the 5th grade Sunday School students will be preparing the elements and assisting Pastor Gail and the ushers with serving. In addition to supporting this initiative, a Diaconate representative will also be present at the planned Sader meal during Sunday School on October 30.

The Wilkinson Food Pantry continues to be open the first and third Monday of each month from 6:00- 7:00 PM. We are serving many more families these days than we have in the past and we sincerely appreciate your donations. Barbara Hartwell, our Wilkinson Food Pantry Coordinator, reported that 26 families were served in September representing 57 individuals. Thank you in advance for continuing to support this ministry.

The Diaconate continues to investigate the possibility of using a website called “Lotsa Helping Hands.” It is a way to help a friend, loved one, and/or family in the community who may be in crisis. Examples include meal delivery, rides, and visits. It can also help organize volunteers to help a military family during deployment or upon arrival homes as well as many other coordination needs. The link to the website is https://www.lotsahelpinghands.com/. We are looking forward to accessing this link at our next meeting and viewing it on a large screen in Classroom 3 after which we will decide whether or not to participate in the program.

Representatives from our Congregational Care sub-committee continue to visit people in need as well as those who must be confined to their homes or a facility. We serve communion using our home communion kits as well as visit with them before and afterwards. If you are aware of anyone who may wish to be visited and/or served home communion, please let us know.

We continued to work with Christian Education, Trustees, Missions, and Music with the planning for Rally Day which was held on September 18. We assisted in providing inputs to Krista Butts, Co-Chair, Christian Education, who wrote a report for the Council minutes documenting the required tasks for Rally Day to be used in future years.

We requested that Pastor Gail provide some sermons for our use should she be unexpectedly absent on a Sunday morning. She has provided two of them as of this writing and plans to provide two more. Other agenda items included an update of the stewardship campaign; 2012 budget preparation; fire drill scheduled for October16; holiday basket project (see separate article in newsletter); and Rev. John R. Chapman dividend check distribution (voted to distribute one half of 2010 dividends to Feeding America, formerly America’s Second Harvest, and the other half to the Heifer project).

Jaydan Manuel Torres will be baptized on October 23, 2011 and Marcus Richard Bradbury on January 15, 2012. The Diaconate will assist at both services.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the worship services or if we can be of any help to you, please feel free to contact any member of the Diaconate.
