Christian Ed Notes (August 2010)

August is upon us.  It seems like yesterday was children’s Sunday and summer had just begun.  I hope that you are all enjoying your summer vacation and spending time with family and friends.  Whatever you are doing, take some time to enjoy the beauty of the season.

Summer Sunday School: CE along with some help from our church gardeners planted a garden in May for a summer Sunday program. We are especially grateful to Carolyn Bassage, Cole Atherton, Phyllis White and Phil Sanborn for being our experts in planning and planting the garden. Each week, the children and leaders have been weeding, watering and picking the vegetable garden located on the Parish house side lawn.  The produce will be given to the food pantry for our patrons.  Take a moment to walk over to the children’s vegetable garden and admire their hard work.  Since there are no volunteers for the next few weeks to assist with the garden, the CE board has decided to suspend the program for the rest of the summer.

Garden Volunteers Needed: Our garden will still need to be tending through out the summer and the vegetables picked for the food pantry. CE is looking for individuals or families who are willing to take one or more weeks during the next 6 weeks to care for the garden and pick the vegetables, which can be placed in the church refrigerator. You can tend the garden at your leisure during the week. Krista Butts and her boys will be tending the garden the week of August 1st. We are looking for volunteers for the weeks of August 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th and September 5th. A sign up sheet will be on the CE bulletin board or let me know.

VBS: During the week of July 12th, Janet Lottmann and her team of 15 adults supervised another successful Vacation Bible school.  Forty-five children attended and spent a fabulous week singing, hearing bible stories, making crafts and eating great snacks.  Many thanks to Janet Lottmann, VBS Director, and her team of volunteers for their wonderful work in making VBS such a success.

Lee Country Fair: Be sure to mark your calendars for Lee fair on September 11th.  There will be plenty of activities to enjoy.  I am looking forward to hearing all about your exciting day.

Sunday School: Sunday, September 12th is the first day of our new church school year and a return to two services on Sunday mornings, at 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM.  We are excited to begin the new school year growing and learning together.  Do you love cupcakes? Come on September 12th to frost and decorate your own cupcake during fellowship time.

Sunday school is held every Sunday of the month.  Children should attend the church service in the Sanctuary, leaving with their teachers after Children’s Time with the exception below.

-On the 1st Sunday of the month, children in 3rd-12th grades will start in their classrooms and go into church for Communion. All other children will start in the Sanctuary.

Sunday school registration forms are available on the church website, so that you may register your child early for Sunday school.  It is critical that a registration form is completed on the first Sunday if not earlier.  Sunday school is for children age four through senior in high school.  If you child turns four during the school year, they can be transitioned to Sunday school at that time.  They do not need to wait until next year to join the program.

Teacher Request: Have you ever considered teaching? Do you like to share your faith? Still looking for teacher(s) to teach the 8:30 AM service 3rd-5th grade class. It is a very rewarding experience. No prior teaching experience needed.

3rd Grade Bibles: All children starting third grade will be receiving their Bibles on September 19th.  If your child is in 3rd grade and was not registered for Sunday school last year or is older and has not yet received a Bible, please let me know so that we are sure to have a Bible for him/her.

Secret Pal Reveal: Secret Pals will be revealed between services on October 3rd.  As we mingle for fellowship time after the first service, the children will find out the identity of their secret pal.  I am looking forward to hearing what you have learned about your secret pal from their postcards/letters.  It is always exciting to learn the identity of your secret pal.  Remember that the children can send a letter or postcard to their secret pal by leaving the self-stamped letter/postcard in the church office.  Please make sure that we can identify the child so that we can send the letter/postcard to the correct address.

I am excited to start another Sunday school year.  I look forward to seeing you all at the Lee Fair on September 11th and then Sunday school on September 12th.

In God’s love,

Sheila Bennion

Christian Education Director
