Christian Ed Notes (April 2009)

posted Dec 18, 2014, 2:34 PM by Henry McTague

Spring has arrived, the birds greet each day with song, flowers are beginning to bloom and the trees will soon have their new leaves. What an exciting and renewing time of year. It is nice to enjoy the warmer weather and sunshine with our family and friends. In the next few weeks, the congregation will have an opportunity to support the youth of our Church as the 2008-9 Christian Education year comes to a close.

Upcoming CE events:
4-12: No Sunday school, Easter Sunday
5-3: Volunteer appreciation luncheon
5-24: No Sunday school
5-31: Confirmation Sunday
6-7: Practice for Children’s Sunday, both services
6-14: Children’s Sunday, both services

The Confirmation classes are progressing on their journey. The confirmands and mentors have begun planning for the service for May 31st. These youth are looking forward to the congregation’s participation and support in their celebration of this important step in their faith journey. Please join and support the Confirmation class and welcome these new members to our church community.

For Lent, CE has chosen a mission project to collect items for care packages for soldiers serving overseas. With the current economy, there has been a decline in donations for care packages. In addition to the collection, the Sunday school classes are creating cards to send with the packages. The items collected and cards will be donated to the Pease Greeters organization to be shipped overseas. There is a wish list posted on the CE bulletin board and a collection box below. Please have all items to the church by Sunday, April 5th.  Thank you for the support for our deserving service men and woman.

Have you ever wanted a secret pal? Sign ups have begun for our sixth annual Secret Pal Program. Any youth through 8th grade may participate in the secret pal program. We also need adults to volunteer to be a youth’s secret pal.  This is great opportunity to become better acquainted with a younger member of our Church family. The process is simple: you send a few postcards or letters to your secret pal. The youth can also return letters to their secret pals through the Lee Church Congregational office. Deadline for submission of forms is May 24th. Please return them to me or leave them in my church mailbox #25.

There will be no regular Sunday school classes on May 24. There will be Sunday school offered during the Confirmation Sunday service.

It is very important for as many of the students as possible to attend their Sunday school classes on June 7th, especially any who plan to participate in the Children’s Day service. During the class time on June 7, the classes will practice for Children’s Day. On June 14, all youth and their families may attend either service as they normally do. We will celebrate our youth at both services on that day in a service that they created.

Teacher recruitment for next year has begun.  You do not have to have previous teaching experience to volunteer. The Church does require all adults who work with our young people to complete our Child Safety Training. We plan to hold a training session in conjunction with our Teachers workshop in August. If you are interested in teaching, assisting with a class or substituting, please let me know.

Julie Wojtkowski and Nancy MacLean are scheduling volunteers for the Nursery coverage during the summer. Starting Sunday, June 21st and each Sunday through the summer, there will be one service each week. If you can volunteer to help out in the nursery one or more Sundays please see Julie or Nancy.

July may seem a long off, however preparations for Vacation Bible School are well on the way. The Bible school depends on donations for supplies.  Again this year, there will be a poster on the Christian Education bulletin board for the items needed for VBS. If you can help out by taking a few slips and donating the items, it will assist in providing another wonderful program. Every this program grows and often after their first introduction to our Church the children and their families return in the fall. If you are interested in volunteering for VBS, please e-mail Janet Lottman at jglottmann19@comcast.net.

As always I welcome your comments, questions or concerns regarding CE.

Blessings,
Sheila Bennion
Christian Education Director
